Two Years Post-Graduation: What I’ve Learned.
It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since I graduated from the University of Portsmouth. After dedicating five years to studying fashion, reaching the end of that chapter felt surreal. No more start of term prep, no new modules to dive into just... work.
The transition was a shock to the system. I went straight into a full-time office job (which I genuinely love and am so grateful for), but I couldn’t help the nagging questions that played on repeat in my head:
Was my degree pointless? Did I just waste five years? Will I ever use the creative skills I poured so much time into mastering?
Now, with the benefit of hindsight, I can confidently say, absolutely not!
My degree gave me so much more than just technical knowledge. I developed time management skills, learned how to study independently, and gained a whole toolkit of creative abilities, but above all, the personal growth I experienced was incredible.
Yes, I was disheartened at first. I didn’t land a role in the fashion industry straight out of university, and deep down that was hard to accept. But now, two years on, I’m doing something I love and it’s paying off.
To anyone who is just graduating and expecting job offers to come flying in right away: don’t let it get you down. The path to your dream job might not be instant, but that doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. Be patient, your time will come.
